Extreme heat stress and coral bleaching on Australia’s west coast in 2025

Western Australia’s (WA) coral reefs span thousands of kilometres across diverse and remote biogeographical zones, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Through a unique collaboration across research institutions, Traditional Owners, state and federal government agencies, tourist operators, and citizen scientists, we document the extent of heat stress and bleaching across offshore and coastal coral reefs distributed over more than 2,000 km of shallow-water environments via a combination of aerial and in-water observations.
