Reconstruction of the Historical Series of Marine Fisheries Data in Brazil

Instituto de Pesca is an institution linked to the São Paulo Agency of Agribusiness Technology of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo and, among other duties, is responsible for conducting research, generating and disseminating scientific and technological knowledge about production and the state of fish stocks, and for carrying out fisheries monitoring. Currently, this is conducted in the context of the Marine and Estuarine Fisheries Monitoring Program, PMAP-SP, executed by the Reference Laboratory Unit for Statistical Control of Marine Fisheries Production (Santos), in conjunction with the Research and Development Centres on the North Coast (Ubatuba) and South Coast (Cananéia). The fishery data is obtained by a census method through voluntary interviews with skippers and fishermen and by consulting the records of fish unloading in more than 200 locations in the 15 municipalities along the São Paulo coast. The collection of fisheries data has been carried out by the Government of São Paulo State since 1944.
