EMODnet Human Activities, Tourism, Marinas
The European marinas dataset was created in 2025 by Cogea in collaboration with TransEurope Marinas and European Boating Industry for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is the result of the aggregation and harmonisation of data provided by several sources. The purpose of this initiative is to address a gap in European marine data by mapping the location and capacity of coastal and inland marinas alongside other blue economy sectors. The dataset is updated whenever new data or revisions become available, and it can be viewed and downloaded from the EMODnet web portal (Human Activities, https://emodnet.ec.europa.eu/en/human-activities). The dataset contains point features representing the marinas with at least 50 berths located along the European coastline. Within this framework, the concept of a marina corresponds to the following definition: a marina is a sheltered harbour or basin primarily intended for the secure berthing and landing of leisure craft. While occasionally accommodating commercial vessels, its main purpose is to serve recreational boating with tailored land and water facilities for participants. The current geographical coverage is partial and includes the following countries and territories: Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, France (including Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint-Barthélemy), Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Ireland, Italy, Jersey, Montenegro, Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The dataset provides the following attributes for each marina: name, country, geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude), total number of berths, and data source. To improve geographical coverage while awaiting more comprehensive and harmonised information from official sources, the dataset also includes selected marina features (Key=leisure, Value=marina) derived from OpenStreetMap (OSM) covering all the EU countries, as well as Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, the Faroe Islands, Georgia, Guernsey, Jersey, Iceland, the Isle of Man, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. These OSM-derived data are provided in a separate feature layer and are clearly distinguished from records originating from official or authoritative sources. OSM-derived features may include both point and polygon geometries representing marina locations and spatial extents. Where available, the OSM data provide the following attributes for each marina: OSM ID, name, country, location (coastal, inland), notes, geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude, for points only), and area (square km, calculated for polygons only). As official datasets become available, OSM records will be progressively reviewed and replaced or integrated with authoritative information where appropriate.
