ILIAD - Oceanographic data of Palio Buoy

The Palio Buoy, deployed in the North Aegean Sea, serves as a critical in-situ observation platform within the ILIAD project’s Oil Spills – Aegean Digital Twin. Equipped with oceanographic sensors, the buoy provides continuous measurements of oceanographic sea surface temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, TDS, currents, and waves conditions. This high-resolution, real-time data supports the satellite-based oil spill detection system by supplying ground-truth environmental parameters for validating anomalies detected on Sentinel-1 imagery. Moreover, the buoy’s measurements feed into hydrodynamic and oil spill trajectory models, improving the accuracy of forecasts for spill movement under changing wave, and current conditions. Integrated with the Oceancast visualization platform and the ILIAD Marketplace, Palio Buoy data contributes to near real-time situational awareness, enabling authorities, environmental agencies, and stakeholders to respond rapidly and effectively to oil spill incidents in the North Aegean.
