SNO MEMO - Marine mammal, sample-taker of the marine environment

The SNO-MEMO is an observation network dedicated to the Southern Ocean. Data are collected from in situ Argos beacon sensors placed on the heads of marine mammals : temperature, salinity, fluorescence, light attenuation, dissolved oxygen, prey capture attempts, sea state. The Southern Ocean plays a fundamental role in the regulation of our planet's climate. This ocean hosts an ecosystem that is likely to be very vulnerable to global warming, as many species of phytoplankton and zooplankton are very dependent of the Antarctic sea ice. The SNO-MEMO allows to cover the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. With other international partners, a quasi synoptic coverage of the Southern Ocean is ensured.
