Numerical lagrangian data issued from river sources in Indonesia

The data allows to describe the Lagrangian trajectories of fictive particles from major river discharges in Indenosia in a current field from a numerical ocean circulation model. Additional files also give access to the status of the particles (stranded / not stranded), to the concentration of the particles for each mesh of the grid. Marine plastic debris has become a major man-made pollution problem, with a significant portion of this production ending up in the oceans. This marine pollution is not only a major impact on marine biodiversity but also a societal impact. Through support to marine debris monitoring and modeling, the project aims to raise awareness and knowledge of Indonesian institutions on marine plastic pollution, in order to implement appropriate prevention and recommendation interventions. Our intention is to provide a statistical view of possible sites of plastic accumulation at sea for different seasons and different years impacted by El Niño / La Niña events. The statistics are computed by changing different parameters of the numerical models and Lagrangian schemes and performing a realistic simulation over the period 2016-2020. The project will also include a series of in situ validation, both for Lagrangian trajectory in a specific site off the Java Coast and collect in-situ data for validation of the ocean model (see Dobler et al. 2022).
