Utilizing Benthic Video Footage for Detecting Large Debris on the Seafloor in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland (2019)
This data was collected in 2019 at three locations in Placentia Bay by another research group at Memorial University, as a part of the Coastal Environmental Baseline Program Initiative under the Oceans Protection Plan of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
Video footage from drop cameras used for ground truthing was shared with the Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey for the purpose of analyzing for macro-debris present on the seafloor. Average field of view (FOV) was estimated for each individual video and GPS coordinates were used to estimate video transect lengths in order to determine debris density. When identified, debris was categorized according to its size, material, source category, and interaction with surround environment.
