Rehabilitation of the Salt Marsh in the Bay of Sept-Îles: Longue-Épée Sector (2008)

The Salt Marsh Rehabilitation Project for the Bay of Sept-Îles – Longue-Épée Sector (2008) aims to find so-called “soft” solutions against salt marsh erosion in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where ice dynamics are a major factor in erosion. The Comité ZIP Côte-Nord du Golfe (ZIP CNG) wanted to achieve the following goals:

  • Restoration of the Longue-Épee salt marsh;
  • Alleviation of the erosion effect that acts on the Spartina population;
  • Rehabilitation of the salt marsh in Baie des Sept-Îles — Longue-Épee sector;
  • Increase in the area of habitats suitable for species living in salt marshes.

More specifically, the Comité ZIP CNG wanted to:

  • Transplant Spartina alterniflora into a disturbed environment;
  • Develop a so-called “soft” protection system against erosion acting in the marsh on the Spartina;
  • Raise awareness among local people about the importance of wetlands and their colonizing plants.
