Preserving Coastal Habitats in Nitassinan, Region of the Village of Ekuanitshit
This action-study project (2019) aims, first of all, to gather the information necessary to specify how the community of Ekuanitshit wishes to implement the adaptation measures proposed as part of its adaptation plan. Thus, the University of Quebec in Rimouski (UQÀR) and the Comité ZIP Côte-Nord du Golfe (ZIP CNG) have drawn up a list of eroding sites that can be restored by vegetation. These sites were then presented to the community so that members could choose, according to their criteria, the site they wanted to protect as a priority. In a second step, the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute (FNQLSDI) and the Comité ZIP CNG will support the community of Ekuanitshit in the restoration of a natural habitat threatened by erosion as well as in the development of good practices in coastal environments through the publication of a guide. The present project therefore consists in a characterization of potential sites for restoration on the territory of the community.
