ATmospheric System (ATS) data collected aboard the CCGS Amundsen in the Canadian Arctic.

Until 2022, the AVOS system served as the primary onboard meteorological data source for the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen. Managed by Environment Canada, AVOS involved annual sensor installation and removal, while Amundsen Science oversaw data processing. The system continuously recorded standard meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, air temperatures, humidity, dew point, and atmospheric pressure along the ship's tracks during its annual scientific expeditions in Canadian Arctic regions. In 2023, the new ATmospheric System (ATS) was added to the pool of instruments aboard the CCGS Amundsen and is solely managed by Amundsen Science technicians. It replaced the AVOS system as a primary onboard meteorological data source. The ATS offers expanded capabilities, recording not only core atmospheric parameters but also shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes, PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation), surface temperature, and cloud cover. The AVOS system is still operational, but its data will no longer be published. They serve only as references for comparison and validation of ATS data. Amundsen Science?s responsibilities regarding the ATS include sensor deployment, system maintenance, and data processing. Both ATS and AVOS are operating concurrently aboard the CCGS Amundsen during each expedition.
