Global ocean tide FES (elevations and loading)

Auxiliary product FES2022 (Finite Element Solution) Ocean Tide The FES2022 tides database include 2 components: tide elevations (amplitude and phase) and tide loading (amplitude and phase) on a 1/30°x1/30° grid:

  • Tide elevations: FES2022b ocean tide model is distributed; this model has been computed using the new FES2022 tidal loading grids. Two versions are available: + Non extrapolated version: the model is defined on a 1/30° grid directly interpolated from the finite element native grid of the model. [Update March 2026] We also provide the model on the native grid of the model. + Extrapolated version: the above version has been extrapolated on the coasts in order to cover nearly entirely the coastal regions. The procedure is explained in the user manual. The mask is also delivered.
  • Tide loading: the new FES2022b tide loading must be used to compute the FES2022b geocentric (elastic) tide as follows: FES2022b geocentric (elastic) tide = FES2022b oceanic tide + FES2022b loading tide.

A brief description of the FES2022 model construction and performances is given in the User Manual (link below).

Data files are on the dissemination services (on the authenticated FTP/SFTP and Thredds into 4 separate directories: fes2022b/load_tide fes2022b/ocean_tide_non_structured, fes2022b/ocean_tide_extrapolated and fes2022b/ocean_tide folders). The subdirectories include all the 34 tidal components: M2, S2, K1, O1, P1, Q1, Nu2, Mu2, N2, K2, Eps2, L2, Lambda2, M4, 2N2, J1, M3, M6, M8, Mf, MKS2, Mm, MN4, MS4, MSf, MSqm, Mtm, N4, R2, S1, S4, Sa, Ssa, T2. To allow you to download as small as possible files, the files have been compressed using the xz program using the LZMA2 compression algorithms. To decompress the files, you must use this command or 7-zip if you use Windows. [Update March 2026] The new tidal prediction algorithm, PyFES, is available here: https://github.com/CNES/aviso-fes. The PyFES library version v2025.2.0 at least must be used to compute the FES2022B tide using either the non structured (or native) finite-element grids or the cartesian grids. This new PyFES library becomes the official version of the AVISO tidal prediction software and any coming updates in the code will only be implemented in PyFES.If you use the code, please cite : "The code used to compute FES2022, was developed in collaboration between Legos, CLS and CNES and is available under GNU General Public License". We guarantee the results obtained with this code, but not if using any other prediction code.
