Evaluate the Abundance of American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) and Act on the Connectivity of their Habitats, on the North Coast of the Gulf

The Comité Zone d’Intervention Prioritaire Côte-Nord du Golfe (ZIP CNG) decided to take action to help restore eel habitat connectivity on the North Shore. To this end, a two-objective project was developed for the year 2024-2025 to initiate the process: (1) validate the presence of eels in rivers with impassable barriers and characterize these barriers and the upstream habitat; (2) design eel-friendly facilities at selected dams. An inventory and characterization of upstream migration barriers was thus carried out on the Riverin River (MRC de Sept-Rivières) and the Sheldrake River (MRC de Minganie) in July and August 2024. Following the inventories, an external firm was commissioned to propose potential facilities to ensure eel migration upstream on the Riverin River.

2026 Update: Additional inventories were carried out in the summer of 2025 at the Riverin River site to gather data on eel migration at the dam and on the passability of natural barriers upstream.
