Measuring Carbon Capture and Restoring Northern Coastal Aquatic Habitats to Contribute to Climate Change Mitigation

The objective of this project is to generate ecological data in order to restore aquatic ecosystems and mitigate human impacts on Canadian coastal and marine environments. The Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Fund (AERF) is part of the renewal of the Oceans Protection Plan. The program provides $75 million over a period of 5 years (2022—2027) to support aquatic restoration that will help address the main causes of coastal and marine degradation. This dataset covers several eelgrass beds on the North Shore, extending from Baie-des-Homards, west of Port-Cartier, to Kegaska. In order to restore aquatic habitats on the North Shore, the Gulf North Shore ZIP Committee carried out ichthyological and floristic inventories, and evaluated physicochemical parameters and abiotic factors, making it possible to characterize eelgrass beds in summer 2023.
